REPLY FROM MAYOR's OFFICE Hunter Smith ElmCityCycling New Haven, CT 06511 RE: Traffic Enforcement Mr. Smith: Mayor DeStefano is in receipt of your letter dated 22 January 2008 to CAO Smuts. He has read and reviewed your letter. The Mayor agrees with ElmCityCycling (ECC) that we can, and must, do more to maintain safe and orderly streets. Thanks to the efforts of Alders like Erin Sturgis-Pascale, Alex Rhodeen and Roland Lemar taking the lead in crafting new and inventive traffic calming policies citywide, we are on track to create more "welcoming" streets for cyclists and pedestrians. Please know that I will personally discuss your request for a liaison from the NHPD to the cycling community with the CAO's Office and Chief Ortiz. As for the next Chief of Police for the City of New Haven that individual will face challenges both old and new. Better traffic enforcement is not the least of these challenges. Enforcement will be an important goal for any Chief of Police as this is truly a quality of life issue for all of our neighborhoods. If the Mayor's Office can be of any further assistance please feel free to contact me at anytime. Sincerely, Sean Matteson Cc: Hon. Carl Goldfield, President of the Board of Aldermen Hon. Gina Calder, Alderwoman Ward 2 Hon. Erin Sturgis-Pascale, Alderwoman Ward 14 Hon. Alex Rhodeen, Alderman Ward 13
